Aaron Gilliland: I recall there was a reddish-pink potato breed during the Soviet times. (In retrospect, I suppose it may have been the result of hybridisation with batatas or some other exotic South American tubers. Soviet agrotech was big on hybridising, and modern gene insertion techniques were not yet available.) It was usually fed to pigs, and the pigs were then slaughtered and the pork sent to Leningrad, but a combination of food shortages and the Perestroika-era encouragement of private initiative led the pink potatoes to be fed to paying humans for a while.
