"He said women needed equal respect...."
Yes...
"...rather than equality."
Sorry, what ?
"Women cannot do all the work done by men, he added, because it was against their "delicate nature".
My head hit the floor. The whole point of giving equal respect is that you don't judge people based on gender !!! You allow people to compete on ability and ignore their gender ! Why is this so complicated ? Aaaaargh !!!!
You are not treating people with equal respect if you say that one gender can't do a job the other gender can. Equal respect implies equal values; if something is acceptable to one gender then it must also be acceptable to the other. Saying, "you can't do this, you're a woman" is the absolute antithesis of equal respect.
Grrr.

Isn't that an unconstitutional statement with Turkey's constitution? Impeach!!
ReplyDeleteThe more probable is that they are manipulating the ballots...
André Esteves I don't know. It might be called freedom of speech, but let's hope it doesn't have freedom from consequences.
ReplyDeleteRhys Taylor He is the president of Turkey. Did he swore to maintain or destroy the constitution? Is that a republic or what?
ReplyDeleteAndré Esteves I don't know anything about Turkey's constitution or what it says about the equality of men and women, or freedom of speech, but it appears this isn't the first time he's tried to change it (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7025294.stm). More google searching reveals other examples in 2011 and 2013. Seems that he's pretty determined about this.
ReplyDeleteGiven that the Turkish constitution both declares Turkey to be a secular state and makes religious education compulsory in schools, I wouldn't hold out high hopes for it...
ReplyDeleteTechnically he is correct: women can't do all the work that men do. The way he puts it isn't particularly nice though.
