Tom Holland on cartoons

"Asked if acts of violence against those who publish images of the Prophet Muhammad can "never be justified", 68% agreed that such violence was never justifiable."

I find that an extremely worryingly low figure.

  2. It also makes me somewhat dubious of the claims "we're tired of professing our differences from extremists". Sure, the number of people who actually commit atrocities is vanishingly small. But if a whole third (!) of the rest have even some level of sympathy with them, it's not reasonable to expect the majority to remain silent, "nothing to do with us".  It is vitally important that they protest, and be seen to protest.

  3. On the flip side, "can never be justified" is a long way from "almost never". It must be remembered that the Muslim community in the west (like many other minority communities) has suffered a lot - and continues to suffer - from racism. If you were to ask black people in the US south if violence against people who dress up in white sheets and burn crosses can be justified, you might get far fewer saying "never".

Finding the right balance between preventing racism and incitement to violence and defending freedom of speech is really tricky, and there will always be significant pissed-off minorities on one side or the other: or both, if you're getting it 'right'.
