Digging to the mantle

"Scientists will set out this week to drill a hole into the Indian Ocean floor to try to get below the Earth's crust for the first time. They want to sample rock from the planet's mantle - its deep interior. In the process, the researchers hope to check their assumptions about the materials from which the crust itself is made. It will probably take several years to drop the full 5 to 5.5km, says co-team leader, Prof Chris MacLeod."

I'm pretty sure I know what's going to happen here :

  1. I'm betting on :
    - Waste of taxpayer's money
    - It's all Jeremy Corbyn's fault
    - It's all the EU's fault
    - IMMIGANTS !!!
    - It's gonna kill us all !
    - Continental drift is a hoax
    - Something about global warming

  2. .... and :

"It clearly states the site has been chosen because of the already thinning crust. Now, take a bore hole down 5Km and the risk of PRESSURE from not have that 5Km weight of rock on top of it COULD be catastrophic, it might now, but we DONT know, so why take the risk?"

"Why waste money on something we cannot influence?
In fact, this could be a dangerous project for the environment. We start opening holes and heat could explode through the hole into the sea and upset the balance of nature.
This could kill creatures. Please stop."

"Heat from the mantle could be warming the continents and oceans, thus creating an alternative explanation for climate change."

So far I can't find out anything about Jeremy Corbyn, the EU, or immigration, but it hasn't been up that long.

  3. A few more gems :

"I suppose the worst thing that could happen is for the planet's oceans to drain away from the surface."

"But, and this is the important bit for me - what is the use of knowing that the crust is made from basalt? It has no value only another than an entry in the annals of human understanding."

    And my personal favourite :
"When they puncture the crust all the insides will come out and we'll fly off into the universe like a balloon when you let go of the neck. Tey may also disturb the Soup Dragon."
    The... the... soup dragon ??
I can't tell when people are being sarcastic or stupid anymore.

  4. I wish there were some way to forcibly remind people that the internet was partially invented at CERN and that any comments about blue-skies research having no value posted on the internet were therefore massively ironic.

  5. I think the risk of reptilian creatures being disturbed is why they are doing this in the Indian ocean and not in Wales.

  6. Sometimes, in my darker moments, I wonder if eugenics was really such a bad idea...

  7. It would make sense to drill in the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean (being the deepest in the world).

  8. Phoenix Williams Thank you for the explanation. You are completely correct. Can I see the diagrams of where they are going to drill in comparison to Mariana trench?
