A minister who has claimed that the internet was invented thousands of years ago by ancient Indians is being met with ridicule. Biplab Deb, who is the chief minister of the north-eastern state of Tripura, made the comments at a public function on Tuesday evening. He cited an example from the ancient Hindu epic Mahabharata to prove his point, but has not found many takers.
More recently, in September, junior education minister Satyapal Singh raised a few eyebrows when he claimed that the airplane was first mentioned in the ancient Hindu epic Ramayana. Mr Deb said that the battle of Kurukshetra in the Mahabharata proved the existence of not just the internet, but also satellite technology in ancient India.
He said the fact that one of the characters in the epic, Sanjaya, had been able to give a blow-by-blow account of a battle that was taking place many miles away to his king Dhritarashtra proved India had access to both technologies.
WHAT ? You mean it wasn't Al Gore ?

Yes, this has been interesting for as long as I have known about it, which is forty years now. Mahabharata also describes the use of city busting weapons that precisely match the description of how nuclear weapons are used as well as their effects.
ReplyDeleteThe flying war machines are described in several different accounts.
Lost ancient high technology. We don't want to believe it, but there were ancient civilizations that were more technologically advanced than we are today.

ReplyDeleteWhile snopes might occasionally be correct, they have been wrong too many times. I take what they say with a grain of salt.
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm not going to specify to which of you I'm responding.

Rhys Taylor - For the record, I hadn't even read the snopes article when I replied. Thus, I wasn't commenting on the specific article. However, even though Gore actually used the word "created", I can see where people can interpret that to mean essentially the same thing. Especially the way he phrased it. I think the most Gore did was to help create the path to where the internet became available to the public. I'll bet Gore would scratch his head if someone asked him about the "frozen yellow garden hose".
ReplyDeleteSorry Rhys, thought the additional context for the quote would be good.
ReplyDeleteChris Greene It is, but I only mentioned Al Gore as a deliberately dumb joke. Next time I'll have to raise the snark. ;)
ReplyDeleteRhys Taylor, aware; unfortunately, not everyone is in on the joke. :( Sorry for being a stick in the mud. :(
