I can see this polarising opinion on Musk still further, but as long as any plan can be attempted safely..
In a series of tweets, Mr Musk explored how his businesses could help the team. He suggested that The Boring Company is "pretty good at digging holes". He also mused about inserting a nylon tube into the cave and inflating it "like a bouncy castle" to create an underwater tunnel.
A spokesman for The Boring Company, said: "We are speaking with the Thai government to see how we can help, and we are sending SpaceX/Boring Company people from the US to Thailand today to offer support on the ground. Once we confirm what exactly will be helpful to send or do, we will. We are getting feedback and guidance from the people on the ground in Chiang Rai to determine the best way for us to assist their efforts."
Mr Musk initially explored whether The Boring Company, which he founded in 2016, could help rescue efforts using its "advanced ground penetrating radar". He added that it could supply "fully charged Powerpacks and pumps" to aid authorities. He then considered that it was "maybe worth trying" inserting a nylon tube into the cave network to create an air tunnel underwater.

Good.
ReplyDeleteAnd nylon tunnel would keep its shape under water because.....?
ReplyDeleteBecause it's filled with pressured air, presumably.
ReplyDeleteRhys Taylor so it should have shape of a ball or have a lot segments. In the second case it is no longer nylon tunnel but ( light? ) construction made of......... ? Presumably steel...
ReplyDeleteKazimierz Kurz I don't see why that would be the case. Might not be nylon though, but some other flexible material.
ReplyDeleteRhys Taylor no. It should be not flexible, because of pressure. It if it is underwater, it may be quite big. And additionally it should be strong enough to crawl within it. So nylon is completely typical musk celebrity like idea. Sorry, but world is full of smart people who may help here, by no, Musk is not one of them..
ReplyDeleteKazimierz Kurz I don't see the problem, but let's wait and see. Last I heard they were training the children to dive.
ReplyDeleteRhys Taylor I suppose trained rescuers have some experience in such situations. For some time in my living I have done climb a lot, and I know smart people without experience seldom have any idea of what is possible in such circumstances. So I trust in experts, not in celebrities...
