Aquatic Robots May Help Rebuild Coral Reefs

Aquatic Robots May Help Rebuild Coral Reefs

An aquatic robot called LarvalBot is being tested as a means of artificially rebuilding coral reefs damaged by events like reef bleaching.  Previously the robot has been dubbed RangerBot, which has been used to seek-and-destroy invasive Sea Stars (nee Starfish).

This repurposed version of the robot, instead of hunting, will be used for reef seeding.  Specifically, they're able to carry and spread coral larvae over damaged areas of reefs, theoretically increasing their ability to spread more than 100 fold over their natural rates.

With the reef systems increasingly threatened by human activities and climate, such efforts to artificially repair and restore these "Rainforests of the Seas" may well be our best hope.
