This whole documentary ("Memory Hackers") is worth watching, but I found the segment on treating phobias (4 min 30 s) especially interesting. Retrieving memories makes the neural connections that encode them vulnerable to being re-written. Combining this with medication makes it possible to quickly and completely erase specific phobias. As they say, this isn't a generic way of suppressing fears, but a highly targeted approach to memories.
