Review : The Expanse
What's that you say ? A new show on the Sy Fy channel ? Yes, I'm sure that will have all the wit and sagacity we've come to expect from the network that brought us Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus.

Having read a good chunk of the original stories, I turn away slightly from mythological themes and back to something more academical : the ...
It's not managed to suck me in. I watched the first episode but it really didn't grab my attention.
ReplyDeleteThat picture strikes me as wrong. The stream bends in mid-air. I can't think of any reason why it would do that.
ReplyDeleteRhys Taylor A very fair review I think. I read the novels before the series came out, and my first reaction was: Yes! for the bits where scientific accuracy came through, and for the visuals, and then: oh. no. no. no. no. What did they do to the characters?
ReplyDeleteMy experience of the characters in the novels is very different from those portrayed in the television series, which is something people will have to experience for themselves.
As for the rest, I think you nailed all the points I would, so I think this is an excellent review.
Jennifer Linsky the Coriolis force is proportional to velocity, that's the closest thing I can think of.

ReplyDeleteVery counter-intuitive, but it does make for striking images.
No, I understand the sideways pour, but look where it enters the glass. There's a double bend. I can't think of any reason for it to do that.
ReplyDeleteYes, the double bend is odd. I wonder if it's due to surface tension, though when you watch the video the water streams follows that path instantly.
ReplyDeleteOliver Hamilton It's definitely a slow-burner, but it does pick up the pace. The desire to know what happens next gets a bit stronger with each episode. Though it never really gets to the level of compulsive viewing and there aren't any characters I would care about if they died. In short it's worth persevering with if there's nothing else on.
ReplyDeleteIan Rawlings Indeed, quality British dramas are few and far between. And they tend to be either very very good or abysmal. On the plus side, as far as quality documentaries go we have achieved complete and utter global dominance.
ReplyDeleteNovels are great, the show has fantastic visuals.
ReplyDeleteWilliam Black I loved the TV series, but I did not read the novels, so I had non preconceived notion about the characters..
ReplyDeleteGood review, I agree with most of it, and yet, I want to watch Season 2,
ReplyDeletePaul Carr Oh, I'll be watching season 2. For all its flaws I'm disappointed that it's not out until next year.
