Evolving intelligence in order to beat the bullies

Low-ranking meerkats can solve puzzles to gain food because higher-ranking meerkats will steal food from them and thus the low-ranking meerkats have to work harder and smarter to survive.

I really don't care for the philosophical implications. Not before bed at least.
