The voters, they are fickle, confused and confusing. They'd slightly prefer Labour was in charge, they don't think leaving was a good idea but are evenly split on the prospect of a straightforward second referendum, really don't want a three-way referendum but would quite enthusiastically vote to remain if there was one.
I think we're now entering fractal territory in which Brexit is itself a metaphor for Brexit.
Support for a straightforward second referendum has climbed to 40% — its highest figure recorded in a YouGov poll — but still behind the 42% who oppose the idea.
The idea of a three-way referendum, proposed this week by former Cabinet minister Justine Greening, is itself unpopular with voters, with only 36% in favour of the proposal and 47% opposed to the idea.

ReplyDeleteFor many decades now, I've been regaled with tales of idiot Americans - I'm no longer even appalled by them, I am told these stories, even here in the States. There's always a condescending prefatory caveat about how what follows doesn't apply to me, like some overture to an opera buffa. I kinda smile and laugh along, for some of the stories are funny and I suppose most of them to be true.
ReplyDeleteBut internally, I am baring my teeth and quoting that old kotowaza 頭隠して尻隠さず == hiding one's head and baring one's ass.
Well, now I've lived long enough to see the UK's reputation reduced to just such a terrible state of affairs. Never again will anyone be able to say the UK is a more sensible place than the USA - which I freely admit is just chock full of stupid people.
